where I grew up

July 12 – Ali and Sam in Princeton, NJ.

My school from kindergarten through third grade, Nassau Street School is now part of Princeton University’s Lewis Center for the Arts. Joyce Carol Oates has her creative writing class there and there’s a wonderful theater in the old hated gym.

Alexander Hall – in the PHS choir we sang Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms under Seijii Ozawa….and where Poco and the New Riders of the Purple Sage performed in the early ’70’s.

The old Balt was my dad’s favorite place for malted milkshakes. Those are probably Mercer tiles from Moravian Pottery and Tileworks in Doylestown, PA.

Always the tigers. This is the front of Nassau Hall, the oldest building on campus.

Gothic Revival.

Sam is related to John Notman, who designed Prospect House.

a few weeks back, we had our 40th PHS reunion. We are in denial, Marty says. Here’s another link for Sam‘s work.

Pat Rogers, my best friend from high school is now a psychotherapist in Boston.

early girls

the first cherries of the season. Transplanted the cukes today and checked out the sprawling tomatoes. Rain and sun, who could ask for anything more.

south bend

Work created from 2001 to 2004 when I lived in South Bend, IN. I worked as Design Director at WNDU-TV and painted on the weekends. My palette changed to include more whites and blues, reflecting a love of cold and snow.  I exhibited at the South Bend Regional Museum of Art, Circa Arts Gallery and Colfax Cultural Center.

pennsylvania and pacific nw/canada

Works from the past four years, painting at local arboretums and on vacations to the coast of Oregon and British Columbia’s mountains and islands. During this time I worked at QVC as Manager of Broadcast Graphics. (all these jobs have paid for paint and canvas!)

From 2006- 2007 I showed at Viridian Artists in NYC and Wayne Arts Center in PA.

In 2008 I exhibited in a benefit auction at Florence Lynch Gallery and had works in Prince Street Gallery’s 2008 Small Works Invitational. Both in NYC.

summer

the second year bumper crop of strawberries. I made this tart for a party. Do not use frozen berries, but do use a food processor for the crust–it works!

gardens alive/early kale and mizuna is still flourishing in 90 degree heat, although the cabbage moths have found it. The radicchio and red lettuce is coming in now too;

I’ve stopped mowing most of the backyard. The neighbors are flummoxed – they obviously haven’t read the New Yorker article ‘Turf War’ by Elizabeth Kolbert.

They also missed seeing  SALT, or Smaller American Lawns Today site.

Last year we had a problem with predatory wasps because E herbicided my hill where I had put down thick layers of newspapers & straw in an effort to reduce erosion and water running down into the basement. Bare ground is the wasps’ favorite habitat. This season he’s resisted spraying and I have some nice new ground cover. (behind the purple Echinacea)

Mama Bunny’s baby came out of its burrow to softly hop over and graze my ankle one morning while I was picking strawberries. No damage to the patch. They prefer clover.

wish I’d planted more than just 3 peony bushes. They are so lovely;

italy

These paintings were all conceived during my residency in Montecastello di Vibio, Umbria in September 2007, at the School of International Painting, Drawing and Sculpture. Most have now been completed and can be found in the Eshop part of the blog.

26 artists attended the school, ate locally fresh Italian meals and often found ourselves painting en plein air together in the hills and valleys of Umbria. Our trips to Rome, Perugia, Assisi and Todi, the famous ceramics of Deruta  and the charming art deco architecture of Marsciano are documented at these links.

Jack has a fabulous villa outside Todi and spends the fall and spring on the lower east side.  A perfect balance. You can view pics of his pool (that I covet) in the link to the villa. He’s  selling two apartments at Buda in Umbria. His contact info is available from his website.

I had been to the Umbria jazz festival in Perugia in 2005 with my pal Kathleen, but living and painting for almost a month in Italy is a much different experience than a short 10 day vacation. Need to return to the area for further ‘research’….

new work

My latest paintings. Most of these are from this spring when my gardens and backyard here in southeastern PA were bursting with azaleas, peonies and forsythia. Versions with more greens are from lush early summer when we had so much rain.

Several of these were shown recently at the Prince Street Gallery Small Works Invitational. I also participated in Florence Lynch Gallery‘s benefit for the Transfiguration School in NYC.
