There are some stores that have thrived despite the recent economic stress. Big Lots is the company&#8217;s most successful Atlanta location and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lastchancethriftstore.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Last Chance Thrift Store<\/a> is beloved by many. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.decaturestateantiques.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Decatur Estate and Way Back Antiques<\/a> does a good business and historic\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.onstageatlanta.com\/aboutus.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Onstage Atlanta<\/a> has long attracted an audience in its theater space in the center.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.furiousdreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Suburban_Plaza_1215766c1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12004\" title=\"Suburban_Plaza_1215766c\" src=\"https:\/\/www.furiousdreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Suburban_Plaza_1215766c1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>AJC file. Suburban Plaza circa 1960.<\/p>\n<p>The owner, Selig Enterprises, has found a willing tenant to anchor its proposed redevelopment; Walmart and a 149,000 square foot super-store. Neighborhood groups met earlier this fall to draw up non-binding concessions from the developer that other communities&#8217; experiences suggest Walmart will never honor.<\/p>\n<p>This is a plan from Selig with some concessions highlighted in red, courtesy of the Decatur\u00c2\u00a0Metro blog. Higher resolution <a href=\"http:\/\/www.decaturmetro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/suburban-bike-connector.png\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.furiousdreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/suburban-bike-connector.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12006\" title=\"suburban-bike-connector\" src=\"https:\/\/www.furiousdreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/suburban-bike-connector.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"306\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Good Growth Dekalb evolved out of many neighbors&#8217; frustrations at questions that weren&#8217;t asked at any of the neighborhood association meetings, and a parking variance approval that went through without Dekalb county demanding any study, whether for the increased traffic or an environmental impact report. Since according to GADOT, over 70,000 vehicles travel Scott Blvd on a daily basis, an independent traffic impact study is one of the issues that GGD would like to address and the group hired a land use lawyer to investigate whether the county was remiss.<\/p>\n<p>Last Saturday about 100 people marched in protest from Suburban Plaza to the Decatur Square. Musicians from the Atlanta Sedition Orchestra provided accompaniment. The bill would make civil\u00c2\u00a0disobedience a felony in Georgia and is designed to weaken unions. Punishable by up to one year in jail, it would levy a fine of $1,000 on individuals and $10,000 on organizations. The bill passed the Senate on March 3.<\/p>\n<p>A community forum was held on February 23 and the <a href=\"http:\/\/ndpc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">North Decatur Presbyterian Church<\/a> auditorium was packed to standing room only with 300 people, some of whom spoke to the audience.<\/p>\n<p>Volunteers from the <a href=\"http:\/\/dekalb.georgiagreenparty.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dekalb County Green Party<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/atlanta.indymedia.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Atlanta IndyMedia<\/a> helped shoot video for the forum and the March 10th walk.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.furiousdreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/GGDforum1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12016\" title=\"GGDforum1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.furiousdreams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/GGDforum1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"236\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One resident reminded us that corporate greed is only secondary to our willingness to buy cheap goods.
