The Joan Mitchell exhibit at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cheimread.com\/exhibitions\/2011-11-03_joan-mitchell\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cheim and Read<\/a> is still up until January 4th, but I&#8217;ll miss it. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lorenmunk.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Loren Munk<\/a> (aka the James Kalm report) posted his video walk-through on Facebook, which is reposted here for your viewing pleasure. These are Mitchell&#8217;s last paintings, a collection of thirteen from 1985 through 1992, the year she died. Oil on canvas diptych, 1990-91, 86.8 x 157.5 inches.<\/p>\n<p>The Press release states:\u00c2\u00a0<em>&#8220;Through her late work, she strived for immortality, for a merging with the timelessness and formlessness of nature&#8221;.<\/em> I&#8217;m not sure she would agree with a lack of form in nature. Mitchell is quoted as saying,\u00c2\u00a0<em>&#8220;I become the sunflower, the lake, the tree. I no longer exist.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Another milestone this week was sculptor John Chamberlain&#8217;s death at 84. The New York Times at least gives an elegant title to his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/12\/22\/arts\/design\/john-chamberlain-artist-of-auto-metal-dies-at-84.html?pagewanted=1\" target=\"_blank\">obituary<\/a>. The Washington Post titled their blog post\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/arts-post\/post\/john-chamberlain-sculptor-of-crushed-cars-dies\/2011\/12\/22\/gIQAqyZbBP_blog.html\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;John Chamberlain, sculptor of crushed cars&#8217;<\/a>.
